KJ Takes Stormwater on the Road

By

Three KJ employees were invited to speak at the 2014 American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) Energy & Environment Seminar and the California Stormwater Quality Association (CASQA) annual conference. Both events were held in September. And because the majority of our readers were not in attendance, here is a recap:

California Stormwater quality association

CASQA‘s Annual Conference is the premier conference for everything stormwater in California, with hundreds of representatives from the regulatory and regulated community. Our team was asked to present on two different topics supporting California’s newly revised Industrial Storm Water Permit. This is the first new permit in 18 years for industries in California and it is radically different from the existing 1997 permit. Our presentations were focused on lessons we have learned in Washington State, which has had an industrial stormwater permit similar to the new California permit in place for many years, and how those lessons can assist permit holders in California.

Many of the CASQA presentations are also available online.

It was clear from many of the sessions at the conference that the regulators and permit holders alike are still trying to decipher the permit requirements and that there are many questions still unanswered. We have begun to develop strategies for compliance, applying the experience we have gained in other states to specific issues addressed within the new California Industrial Storm Water Permit.

Ross Dunning spoke on a panel including environmental staff from the West Coast Ports of Seattle and Tacoma (WA), Portland (OR), and Long Beach (CA). Ross’ presentation titled Stormwater Challenges & Treatment Solutions from Northwest Port Facilities focused on the drivers for stormwater treatment impacting ports in Washington, Oregon, and California. He described several stormwater treatment pilot studies and projects that have been built or are currently under construction at Northwest Ports.
