World-Class Desalination Expertise

Successful Projects

The Membrane Technology Group at Kennedy/Jenks has completed numerous membrane projects specializing in desalination, including:

  • The pioneering Seawater Desalination Pilot Program for the Marin Municipal Water District in Northern California
  • The comprehensive Brackish Water and Desalination Program and Plant for the City of Oxnard in Southern California.

In addition, we are leading the Honolulu Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) Pilot Evaluation for the WateReuse Foundation.

Exceptional Leadership

The Group is led by Val S. Frenkel, Ph.D., who has more than 25 years of experience in membrane technology. Val was instrumental in developing the membrane desalination processes and in securing the original patents for microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes for water and wastewater treatment. One of the world’s top experts in this field, he has authored or co-authored more than 70 papers on the subject and is a frequent presenter at regional, national, and international conferences.

Seventeen other engineers complete the Membrane Technology Group, covering the entire spectrum of membrane applications for wastewater treatment and reuse, water treatment, and desalination for municipalities and industry.

Membranes Can Achieve Successful Desalination

Kennedy/Jenks Consultants has demonstrated in recent pilot projects how to accomplish the following:

  • Decrease capital and operating costs for full-scale desalination using membrane technology
  • Yield high-quality drinking water from saltwater, seawater, or brackish water
  • Design and install projects that are relatively economical
  • Manage salinity levels according to varying project constraints

Priest Reservoir Bypass Pipeline Project

As part of the $3.6 billion plan to rebuild the aging Hetch Hetchy water system, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) hired Kennedy/Jenks Consultants to assist in developing plans and specifications for the Priest Reservoir Bypass Pipeline Project.

Freeport Pipeline Facilities Project

Kennedy/Jenks designed the $166 million Freeport Pipeline for the Freeport Regional Water Authority (FRWA), a joint powers authority created by EBMUD and Sacramento County to provide 185 MGD of Sacramento River water: 85 MGD to meet the needs of of Sacramento County and 100 MGD to supply EBMUD customers during major droughts.

In order to provide a reliable supply of high-quality Mokelumne River water to East Bay residential, commercial, and industrial customers, this $36 million project consists of 11.5 miles of 30-, 36- and 42-inch-diameter water transmission pipelines.
