Whitefish River Petroleum Site, BNSF Railway Company
Flathead County, Montana
Kennedy/Jenks provided fast-track planning, design and construction services for removal of approximately 5,000 tons of petroleum-containing material from the Whitefish River in Flathead County, Montana. The project involved the construction of a sheet pile cofferdam to drain one side of the river along an approximately 500 foot-long reach. Water drained from the cofferdam was treated using an onsite electrocoagulation system to attain the strict discharge standards. Excavated sediment was dried by mixing with quicklime before loading into railcars for shipment to a land disposal facility.
Kennedy/Jenks and the contractor, Granite Construction Company, prevailed in an uphill battle against time and the elements to complete the removal of petroleum-containing material and restoration of the river bottom to the satisfaction of the USEPA On-Scene Coordinators before Christmas. The sheet pile was pulled and flow restored to the remediated section of river.
