Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Policy Statement

When it comes to the health and safety of our employees and their families, our clients, and the communities in which we work, as well as the protection of the environment, KJ does not compromise. While safe behavior is ultimately the responsibility of each of us, we will provide a safe and healthy workplace and will ensure that safety and environmental issues are incorporated in the planning and execution of the company’s business.

Elements of our successful Health and Safety Program include:

  • Develop programs and procedures to conform to necessary industry compliance regulations.
  • Provide comprehensive employee health and safety training.
  • Mitigate conditions that endanger health, safety or the environment.
  • Engage in sound reuse and recycling practices and energy efficiency throughout our operations.
  • Emphasize compliance with standards and conformity with our safety, health and environmental policies and best practices during employee training and in performance reviews.
  • Foster employee’s expectations to follow health and safety policies and to report any health, safety or environmental concern to company management.

Each year, the President of KJ acknowledges excellence in our commitment to health and safety. The following recipients were acknowledged for work internally and externally during 2017 and 2018.

Christel Poulos

2018 Individual Health & Safety Award Recipient

I have been with Kennedy Jenks for 5 years now and I am honored to be awarded the Health and Safety Award from my colleagues at Kennedy Jenks and I would like to express my appreciation to them and Kennedy Jenks.  I feel very strongly that a portion of my responsibility of being a good receptionist is to keep my co-workers safe every day.  I feel that I am the “Gate Keeper” for the Sacramento Office.  Last year, just across the hall, there was an incident of an employee who was let go who threatened their former employer.  They went under lock down but did not warn anyone in the building about the lockdown.  I found out about it and I no longer felt that it was a safe environment for my co-workers or myself.  I felt we were very vulnerable with our door open every day.  The Sacramento Office has since installed a Ring Doorbell Alarm System on our front door and guests now must be let into the suite.  We also had the Sacramento Metro Fire Department come out and look at our Fire Alarm System to make sure that it was adequate under the fire codes for the building and to see if any changes needed to be made.  Katie McCoy was very influential in implementing the new safety program for the Sacramento office.

I want to express my sincere appreciation and thanks to those who nominated me for the President’s Individual Health & Safety Award.  It is very encouraging, and it makes me feel that my hard work is valued and recognized. I have been fortunate to learn various aspects to demonstrate safe behaviors on the job and details about safety equipment with Bert Drews and John Jindra’s guidance. I am so lucky to be in a position where I have the support from my co-workers who continue to encourage and challenge me to achieve my best as an administrative assistant with Kennedy Jenks. My health and safety practices goes beyond the work place.  I instill it into my children for positive awareness, confidence and motivation.

Thank you for this award for individual health and safety contributions. Having a proactive safety culture is a critical part of our company and is embraced by all of the Kennedy Jenks teams I’ve worked with. Our staff understands that no one’s personal safety is ever sacrificed to get a job done quicker or easier. The Kennedy Jenks safety culture has encouraged me to watch out for my colleague’s safety and speak up about safety concerns, including stopping work if necessary.  Safety is crucial no matter where we are; in the office, in the field, or at home, safety is always the top priority. I am proud to contribute to our on-going safety goals. Here at Kennedy Jenks, safety isn’t just a rule to follow, it’s an attitude to live by.

2017 Individual Health & Safety Award Recipient

I started working on environmental industrial/commercial projects in 2004 right out of college. From the beginning, health and safety has been at the forefront of every project. As more and more clients are becoming aware of the benefits of stringent health and safety programs, it will become more and more important for us to meet and exceed their expectations. Besides meeting the required metrics and completing the required paperwork, it is most important to apply our training in the field and pay close attention to our surroundings. It is always okay to stop work and re-evaluate a situation or circumstance we don’t feel comfortable with – if you see something, say something. Our decisions and actions can affect more than just the project we are working on.

It is an honor to be selected for the President’s Award for individual Health and Safety. I don’t think anyone sets out to perform a job with an award or recognition in mind; I know I don’t. Doing the job well is always very satisfying; however, the recognition is always appreciated. Thanks to everyone at KJ for this honor, especially Waye Sheu and Scott MacFabe for their support and tutelage over the years.

It’s an honor to receive the President’s Individual Health and Safety Award. Having worked in the field off and on throughout my career at KJ, I’ve learned to recognize the value of working safely. This is especially true whenever I am asked to make confined space entries, which I have done many times. Over the years, I have also learned to appreciate the value of the guidance on safety that Bert Drews, John Jindra, and Bert’s past associates provide to employees. Through their guidance, I have learned the importance of ensuring that other employees understand the safety risks on their assignments and feel comfortable with the level of safety provided. This is especially true when I work with individuals who have little to no field experience, or who work in the field infrequently. Although it was challenging to recently coordinate and oversee multiple confined space entries at the San Jose – Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility for employees of KJ and three subs while meeting the expectations and demands of the client’s safety officer, it was rewarding to complete the entries safely and progressively hear fewer concerns from the client’s safety officer. I wish to thank Keith London for the honor of being presented this Award.

Every member of this small, but experienced, project team prides themselves on completing tasks efficiently and safely. Each member pulls their experience from different corners of the consulting/engineering/construction world and experience working with various clients and subcontractors in different market sectors. All realize that the most important connection is SAFETY. In the past two years, the former Safer Textiles project team has: managed over 10,000 subcontractor hours; installed over 200 wells; logged more than 6,500 hours of dual phase vacuum extraction system installation and operations; and performed groundwater and soil sampling, excavations, sediment dredging, sheet pile installations, and enhanced anaerobic bioremediation injections. Although the last two years have been busy, all work has been completed with no reportable injuries or other health and safety incidents.

The City of San Jose – Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility Capital Improvements Program Project Team is honored to receive the 2017 President’s Project Health & Safety Award. The team consists of over 20 people distributed across four projects, three that involve engineering and condition assessment and one that involves construction management. Field services are being provided on all of these projects, with KJ as lead consultant working with multiple subconsultants on some and as subconsultant on others. Field services have ranged from condition assessment to full-time, on-site construction management and have involved hundreds of temporary process shutdowns and multiple confined space entries, some of which have had a high level of complexity. Services have included work on electrical, controls, fire and life safety, mechanical, civil and structural systems. With much-appreciated support from Bert Drews and John Jindra, the team has taken staff safety seriously by developing written safety plans, preparing client-required process shutdown requests, ensuring adherence to the client’s safety awareness protocol, and watching out for each other. The client strongly enforces its safety program and the KJ team, through hard work and coordination with the client, is successful in gaining the client’s confidence regarding our approach to safety.
