Kennedy Jenks attended the Mojave River Pipeline (MRP) Traveling Screen Project (Project) official groundbreaking ceremony on July 31st. The Project is a key infrastructure initiative led by the Mojave Water Agency (MWA). MWA is a public agency responsible for managing and protecting water resources across a 4,900-square-mile region in Southern California’s High Desert.
This $6.3 million project continues KJ’s long-standing partnership with MWA and ongoing support of sustainable water management. Managed by KJ, this project is a significant upgrade to the MRP, which was originally completed in 2006 and plays a crucial role in regional water management. The project is designed to restore and enhance the MRP by installing a new traveling screen facility to reduce moss and debris entering the pipeline. The project also includes the construction of a new 2-acre groundwater recharge basin to support recharge of up to 10,000 acre-feet of water annually.
The project will enhance MWA’s water management capabilities and contribute to long-term resource sustainability in the region. Traveling screens filter out debris from raw water sources before it can enter conveyance systems, reducing wear and tear on pumps and pipes. By automating debris removal, the system can reduce maintenance downtime and labor costs while also supporting cleaner and more efficient water delivery.
KJ Construction Manager Earl Schwartz joined MWA President Roelle, MWA Project Manager Tesfaye Demissie, and representatives from other construction partners in highlighting the project’s regional significance, which includes serving areas designated as severely disadvantaged communities. KJ Groundwater Practice Leader and Principal-in-Charge Paul Chau was also in attendance.
Construction is scheduled for completion in March 2026.
