Resource Recovery Lead Bhargavi (Gavi) Subramanian, PhD, EIT is a Principal and a key member of KJ’s Applied Research Group. Gavi has more than ten years of experience researching municipal wastewater processes.

As KJ’s Resource Recovery lead for wastewater, Gavi has led and contributed to numerous pilot and full-scale pilot wastewater studies, focusing on anaerobic digestion optimization, co-digestion feedstock and feasibility assessments, biosolids and biogas master planning and technology evaluation for biogas utilization.

While at KJ, Gavi has led and worked on several research projects funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), the Water Research Foundation (WRF), and the California Energy Commission (CEC). One of these projects, funded by the DOE, is related to the recovery of ammonia as fertilizer from wastewater.

Gavi is recognized for her work on anaerobic digester foaming, having authored a guidance document to help utilities manage this complex issue. She has presented at the International Water Association Anaerobic Digester Congress, WEFTEC (the Water Environment Federation Technical Exhibition and Conference), and several regional wastewater conferences in the US. Her research contributions include six peer-reviewed publications, with three stemming from her doctoral work.

She holds a Ph.D. in Environmental/Environmental Health Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, where her dissertation focused on the mechanisms, effects, and control of foaming in anaerobic digesters. She received her bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering from the University of Madras, Chennai, India.
