Pure Water Monterey Expansion: Celebrating a Sustainable Future

By

In early October, Monterey One Water (M1W) celebrated a major milestone in regional water sustainability with two special events marking the completion of the Pure Water Monterey expansion project. On October 2, partners, regulators, and key stakeholders joined M1W for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially announce the completion of the expansion project. On Saturday, October 4, M1W held a public open house for community members, including tours of the expanded facility and details about its environmental and regional impact.

The Pure Water Monterey expansion increases the program’s capacity to produce advanced purified water, adding 2,250 acre-feet per year to region’s water supply and helping secure a reliable, drought-resistant water supply for the Monterey Peninsula. It also plays a vital role in protecting the health of Monterey Bay by reducing reliance on groundwater and decreasing discharge into the ocean.

Kennedy Jenks (KJ) helped guide the expansion from design through construction. Our team worked closely with M1W and other stakeholders to ensure the facility meets rigorous environmental and operational standards.

At the ribbon cutting, speakers from local agencies and project partners highlighted the importance of regional collaboration and innovation in addressing California’s water challenges. Attendees included representatives from the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District, California State Water Resources Control Board, and local elected officials, all of whom played a role in supporting the project’s success.

During the public open house, more than a hundred visitors toured the facility, explored interactive exhibits, and spoke with engineers and staff about the advanced treatment process. KJ team members were on hand to explain the technical aspects of the expansion and answer questions about how the system works.

The Pure Water Monterey expansion represents a commitment to environmental stewardship, community resilience, and long-term water security. We’re proud to have been part of the celebration for this achievement with our client, our partners, and the public.

About Monterey One Water

Located along the Central Coast of California, Monterey One Water (M1W or Agency) manages wastewater treatment and reuse in northern Monterey County. The Agency is driven by its mission to turn the area’s wastewaters into safe, resilient water solutions for the community and the environment. Every day, M1W’s team of environmental superheroes is responsible for cleaning approximately 17 million gallons of used water before safely reintroducing it into the environment. This is achieved through safe mixing with ocean water and water recycling efforts that support food crop irrigation and the drinking water supply.
